Overview

The windshields and related parts varied with Nova generations due to changes with the shape and dimensions of the roof. In particular the upper cowl, A-pillars and windshield channel areas. Other than the obvious changes between Nova generations, many of these parts also vary between body styles. The larger parts—glass, trim, seals—tend to fall into two distinct categories—those for the coupes and those for the sedans. Sedans normally have taller roofs and thus larger windshields.

→ 1962 - 67 the sedan (a.k.a. post) encompasses the body styles of 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan and 4-door wagon—all windshield related parts interchange. Coupes (a.k.a. hardtops) are comprised of the 2-door "sport" coupe and 2-door convertible body styles.

→ 1968 - 72 things can get a bit confusing. To keep it simple, there are two body styles—the 2-door and the 4-door. The "pillarless coupe", what the hobby calls a "hardtop", was discontinued and all Nova body styles received a "closed" or full frame door, as well as a B-pillar (a.k.a the "post"). GM called this revised design the "notch back coupe" and changed the body code from 37 to 27. In some references heading into the 1970s GM still refered to them as "sport coupes", which by then was a different body style, and one not available with the Nova. The term "sedan" refers to the 4-doors in this period, though you will run across parts vendors and non-GM references using the phrase "2-door sedan".

→ 1973 - 79 there are just the 2-door coupe, 2-door hatchback, which are both "notch back coupes", and the 4-door sedan body styles in this period. Straightforward.

We wrote up a short article Replacing Your Windshield??? on common issues encountered with reproduction windshields and related parts. You may want to give it a read if you are in the market for replacement pieces, particularly for the 1962 - 67 cars.

The Parts – Windshields, Seals & Related Hardware

— Group 10 —

GM part name per the catalog in ( ) when applicable.

Terminology

→ Sup. = Superseded – part replaced with a new part & part number. Part could be a new revised design or an existing one pulled from a different vehicle platform.  Part numbers are listed in the chronological order they were superseded in (when applicable). Final part number we found listed in green.

→ Dis. = Discontinued – part no longer available from GM.  Sometimes the part is still available, just with a superseded part number.

→ Early = part (and number) were used early in the vehicle or model production run.

→ ??? = we have not confirmed the part number or related information yet, or the books are a contradictory mess.

All windshields are basically either reproduced or replacements still available from local glass shops. 1975 and later replacement windshields can be hard to find. There are no model specific "oddities" or "exceptions" to watch out for. As you will see from the part numbers breakout, glass variation comes down to model year, body style, tint and later on presence of a radio antenna.

 Buyer Beware...

→ Reproductions fitting terribly—too big, too small, the wrong contours, etc. This is a real problem but usually only occurs with overseas glass. We recommend trying you local automotive glass shop first for replacement windshields.

→ For the 1962 - 67 cars the larger sedan windshield being sold as fitting "all" (same thing happens with replacement seals).

→ Good used windshield glass is becoming difficult to find—watch for chips, sunburns, deep scratches and particularly chips or delamination around the very edges. This can accelerate the spread of "spider webbing" type cracks.

NOTE #1: Some vendors and 3rd party informational resources list the 1962 - 63 convertible windshield as being unique. The GM parts books do not support this. We have seen a separate listing for the converible windshield in a very early GM service labor hours guide, which included a unique part number, but that is it. Our guess is the difference in windshield was initially tinted versus non-tinted, with all convertibles having the tint stripe. As far as the common GM parts books are concerned, the convertible and coupe use the same windshield.

NOTE #2: Multiple parts books concurrently list two seperate part numbers for 1962 - 67 windshields, indicating the buyer had a choice when buying a replacement. The "safety plate" windshilds were around $15 - $20 more, so you can guess which ones the customer was more likely to purchase. Interestingly, this creates the plausible scenario where 2nd gens received the "incorrect" earlier non-"safety plate" windshield. GM drops listing two at the same time in the early '70s.

NOTE #3: Some GM parts books indicate this change was made leading into the 1966 model year covering all body styles. Others books indicate it was phased in during the first half of 1967 model year production.

The windshield utilizes a heavy rubber seal in the 1962 - 67 period. The stainless reveal trim actually mounts into a channel within this seal, traditional clips are not used. Starting in 1968 the windshields are "glued" in with standard rope caulk and the reveal trim utilizes traditional retaining clips common to other GM vehicles. All the seals are currently reproduced with both U.S. and overseas versions available.

 Buyer Beware...

→ Reproductions fitting terribly—too big, too small, the wrong contours, the trim not fitting in the slot properly. This is a real problem and can even occur with the US made reproductions. Steele and Metro tend to be the most trusted brands. We have used Precision quite a bit with no issues, but have received feedback on fitment issues.

→ The larger sedan seal being sold as fitting "all" (same thing happens with replacement windshield glass).

→ Good used and NOS seals are becoming extremely difficult to find. NOS seals, especially for coupes, command big money.

1962—63 Convertible 4846605 (Early)
4873832 (Sup. 07-1962 | Disc. 07-1969)
4873833
It is believed the convertible seal is different on the outer edges
to properly sit over the special convertible A-pillar stainless trim.
The 2-door coupe seal will work in its place and GM listed it as
the replacement starting in th early '70s.
1962—67 Coupe (Hardtop) 4846606 (Early)
4873833 (Sup. 08-1962 | Disc. 12-1974)
None
1962—67 Sedan (Post) 4845138 (Early)
4873834 (Sup. 08-1962 | Disc. 12-1981)
Fits 2-door sedans, 4-door sedans and wagons.

The windshield trim is stainless steel, it is not chrome. In the 1962 - 67 period the trim inserts and "hooks" into the heavy rubber windshield seal. The 1968 and later cars use a traditional trim retaining clip setup common to other period GM vehicles.

 Buyer Beware...

→ Mainly 1962 - 67 cars... Reproductions fitting terribly. The main complaint is the metal being too thin and distorting during installation. Save yourself the headache and have your original pieces professionally polished. They will both look and fit better.

→ The coupe / convertible or later 2-door windshield trim has different pieces than the wagon / sedan trim. The much more common used sedan pieces are regularly advertised as fitting 2-doors or "everything".

→ Mainly 1962 - 67 cars... Good used coupe trim is starting to command high prices due to issues with the repop. NOS is becoming extremely difficult to find, especially for coupes.

Not used on 1962 - 67 cars. GM parts books are an absolute mess 1968 and later. Multiple styles used interchangeably. All are basically reproduced but quality can vary wildly. In some instances visually different clips can be interchanged (not even going to attempt to sort that one out). Good used, old American replacement stock and occassional NOS can still be found on eBay.
